William C. McKay, physician and military guide, was born (March 18, 1824) at Astoria, Oregon. McKay, who was half-Indian and whose father was employed by the Pacific Fur Company, was the step-grandson of Dr. John McLoughlin. He commanded a group of Warm Springs Indians that served as scouts for the U.S. Army in a campaign against the Snake and Paiute Indians in 1866-1868.
